christmas crafties, part one.

it has been a crazy busy season, to say the least. what with working two jobs, and doing all of my little christmas crafts, it gets crazy. today i'm goin to share some little peeks of the ornaments that i made for my coworkers at the salon.

i wanted to be able to give everyone a little something, to show them how much i appreciate them-- but without breaking the bank. painting your own ornaments is a pretty cost effective way to go. whats more, i chose to purchase plastic ball ornaments instead of glass- for one, they are cheaper, and two, i am a giant klutz... i didn't know how i would get through painting and transporting 20 glass ornaments to the salon without a major catastrophe.

the easiest way to go about this, really, is to paint the inside. paint the outside, do whatever the hell that you want, i just know that i love the idea of the glitter being contained inside of the ornament, so that it doesn't get EVERYWHERE!! glitter truly is the herpes of craft supplies.

so, on we go...
purchased empty balls to start...

plus, the giant giant box of paint and glitter that i already had...

you just have to pull off the cap, and squirt the paint on in!!! there are a million different ways to do this, as well as tutorials on youtube. you just want to get enough paint in there and swirled around to get the ornament covered without pooling , and drain the excess out in an egg carton, or whatever works for you. i will warn you though, that if you put too much paint in there, you will have a mess on your hands... i had a couple of flops, where the paint was too thick, semi-dried in a huge chunk, and then decided to slide and leave a big empty space. the plus side of using glass ornaments would be that you could swish some acetone around in there and start over... its ok though because i had purchased a few extra balls juuuuust in case!!!

round one... now, they don't look too interesting. after you let the paint drain out of them for 10-20 minutes or so, you are going to want to rotate their position, however often you want. this will create a marbeled effect. if this is what you are going to do, i would advise you to pick contrasting colors, and if you are going to do say red and green, put white or something else as a buffer in the middle... otherwise when you shake it up, it will have yucky brown splotches

round two.... some adventures with glitter and fabric paint.

this was the last bunch. i know that they look kind of blotchy at first glance, but i PROMISE you when you rotate them they end up marbled. just try and check it out in the final photo!

once your ornaments are completely dry, throw the cap back on, and then add the rest of embellishments as you please!!! i started the first round of ornaments around the first week of december, and then did a batch more once a week for two more weeks. if you are going to do this, do it a little bit farther in advance... sometimes they can take a long long time to dry. plain paint ones arent so bad, but the ones that i had fabric paint and glitter/glitter glue in took a little longer, and i did end up having to take a hair dryer to them in the end.

i chose to glue a piece of ribbon around the top of each of mine with the ever trusty fabri-tac and tie it in a cute little bow. the great thing about being a craft supply hoarder is that i was able to find the perfect ribbon for each one of my little ornaments, matching colors and styles and everything... and i had just kind of made the ornaments randomly. i added little tags to each one, to say who they were for, and looooove mary, and the like. voila! it was a really fun little project.

everyone at the salon really loved their little gifts, and upon first look thought that they were glass ornaments. they all seemed really excited about them and had a million questions about how they were made. the best thing that someone said to me was today when riva texted me to say thank you, and said "its like christmas and easter all rolled into one!"

pin stripe me.

i am loving pin striping right now, and adding it to everyday items. i've tried my hand at it many a time, but i lack the steady hand, and the patience for it. so, i am happy that i know a few people who are really talented at this. all of the work features in this post was done by the very talented Mike Mead, check out some of his other work. he gets craaaaaazy with it!!

this is my wallet. a $7.50 steal, at forever 21. got it pin striped, gave it a whole new life... and the look of a much more expensive wallet! they charge so much for things like this at car shows!

he also took care of my good pal rosa's mixer.... neat, huh!!! bella is her daughter's name, but also the name of her new cupcake business.... Bella Cupcakes. check her out, become a fan, and give her some love as well. i've been lucky enough to taste test her pumpkin spice cupcakes...absolutely delicious, my mouth is watering just thinking about them. i was having a bad day when i ate one, but then when i remembered i ate that cupcake, it made me smile. and at $25 for 2 dozen of those bad boys, it is quite a steal. find her info below!!

it's fall, y'all

gee... since it is the middle of NOVEMBER already, guess i should share my halloween pictures, huh?? crazy girl. life gets a little hectic when you work 6 days a week. i just want it to slooooooow down!!

if you're going to get lost in the corn maze, this is the way to go. oh ps my hair is pink.

just a couple'a good lookin ghosties

everybody knows, you've got to search for the perfect pumpkin. even if they have never been to the pumpkin patch before.

a-ha! there they are!! the short and squatty one belongs to me, of course

this is mary mo scarecrow. she tied for 3rd place in the "railroad scare" not bad for last minute, huh? she's pretty gangster on that lowrider bike.

mmmmm..... ooey gooey, sticky, yummy. delicious caramel apples, hot apple cider (spiked with spiced rum,) and it's the great pumpkin charlie brown. the only way to carve pumpkins.

i made the caramel apples on the super quick-and-lazy. just buy a regular sized bag of caramel candies, and unwrap them. put them into a bowl with a little splash of milk, and melt them in the microwave, stirring occasionally. roll your apples up in them, and voila!! let them harden back up in the fridge before you try to eat them, or you will have a mess on your hands!

super deep in concentration here... not gonna lie, its pretty cute.

the super pumpkin masterpieces. mr. krab, and my little flower face skull. i know its hard to see, but she has some pretty rad teeth.

rosie getting into the halloween spirit, with the little catnip pumpkin i got for her at petco for a whopping $1.

nothing too exciting happened on halloween night. went to mcdonald ave, in pajamas. for those who don't know, they put on a pretty great halloween every year. close the street, there is music, a parade, and most of the beautiful houses are completely decked out!! this was one of my favorite displays... too funny.

its that time again...

ah.... the changing of the seasons, and it feels so good. i love the warm wind, and the smell of pumpkin goodies cooking in the kitchen :) excited to get some baking done with friends.

it is going to be a very busy month... full of parties, classes, you name it. the thing that i am most excited about, though.... taking that certain someone to the pumpkin patch and corn maze, for his first time EVER. thats right folks... he has never been. of course i will be the paparazzi while we go and will load up on pictures of this fun event :)

it is also that time of year again, for breast cancer awareness month!! there are a lot of avenues to donate to the research cause available to us this time of year, so choose wisely! as far as hair stylists go, most of the product lines have re-released our tried and true favorites in pretty pink cans, and donate most of the proceeds!!!

i was happy for the first time to be able to combine both of my jobs in a way. i rallied together a little crew from the salon to volunteer to style hair at Sutter's Catwalk for a Cure. So fun... here are some lovely photos.

believe it or not... could not find the right colored pink shirts this time of year. they were probably all bought out.. so i took it upon myself to dye them in a bucket in the sink.. hehehe!!

ah.... my lovely iron on transfers. i am lucky we have such a simple logo.

the little stack of finished product... so fun!! of course, a bunch of the other stylists wanted them. but, i said NO! special edition only, for those who came to work that day :)

nannette and heidi hard at work... haha those girls look unenthused

some of my messy, flirty handywork. to be worn with a little black dress. love.
